WHO IS MARIA HERTOGH?

- Born March, 1937 (in Java)
- Brought up as Muslim for years (Che Aminah and husband)
September 1949 – Aminah and Maria were traced by biological parents
1950
· Unsuccessful negotiations made to retrieve Maria from Aminah
· 22 April, application made for Maria to be in custody (approved)
· 17 May, custody of Maria entitled to Hertoghs after 15 min hearing (even though Maria said she wanted to stay with Aminah)
· Stayed at York Hill for 2 months
· Appeal for Maria’s custody filed on 28 July
· 28 July, won appeal (uncertainty found in Maria’s father’s representative)
· 1 August, Maria married to a Malaya of 22-years-old
· Failed in the demanding back of Maria
· 26 August, summons taken out
· 20 November, another hearing
· Custody of Maria given to Hertoghs
· Stayed at convent
· 5 December, pictures of Maria published (holding hands with Reverend Mother; kneeling in front of Virgin Mary)
· 7 December, Malay press publishes photos and articles about Maria (srying and weeping; comforted by nun; ‘lonely and miserable life’)
· Malays offended by pictures as Maria, supposedly a Malay, surrounded by symbols of Christian faith
THE RIOT
v 11 December, 1950 – started (at noon, 2000 to 3000 people at Supreme Court)
v Appeal thrown out in 5 min
v Riot erupted (Eurasians + Europeans attacked; cars overturned and burnt)
v Consisted of Malays, Indians and even Chinese
v British failed to be sensitive with the Muslim’s feelings
v 13 December, 1950 – riot under control
v 18 people killed (included 7 Europeans / Eurasians, 2 police officers, 9 rioters); 173 injuries; 2 buildings burnt
v Roads blocked (caused looting in some areas); business and transport service halted; large amount of money spent on repair work
LESSONS LEARNT
